CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Betelgeuse
Age: Ageless - was in his late 30s/early 40s at time of death.
Canon: Beetlejuice
Canon Point: Post-Film
Character Information: Here! Betelgeuse is taken from film continuity, but I will occasionally be referencing the cartoon incarnation at points, as the film is lackluster in terms of his actual backstory.

Personality:

"Hey, these aren't my rules! Come to think of it, I don't have any rules."

In both the world of the living and the land of the dead, it's hard to find anyone to find anyone who's nearly as gross as Betelgeuse is. It's very easily his defining trait, to be quite honest. In nearly every sense of the word, Betelgeuse is just plain disgusting. He keeps himself intentionally un-groomed, choosing to deliberately wear filthy clothes and leaving his hair tattered and filthy. It's absolutely contradictory to his "work", which absolutely insists he manipulates those who seek his services. Yet? He doesn't seem to mind, nay, he all-but-bathes in his own filth. He's loud and obnoxious in just about every sense of the word, using his abilities and mannerisms to almost build himself up as someone who is not to be trusted. His very first scene in the movie comes from interaction with Barbara and Adam Maitland, a dead couple seeking his services, and the very first thing he does is forcefully kiss her on the lips before asking Adam how likely he is to score with her. But, of course, he doesn't give two shits about how they react. Why would he? He's A DEAD GUY!

That's actually something of a recurring theme for him. Betelgeuse is at the point where he seems to recognize that he's the villain of his story, and absolutely revels in it. It's a bit of a conundrum, isn't it? Here we have somebody who is absolutely relying on people to summon him, to make deals with him, to do business, and he chooses to carry around every possible single sign of suspicion. As stated, however, he just doesn't care. He very much falls under black-and-white morality, and wears the fact that he's evil right on his sleeve (HIS MAIN TRANSFORMATION IS -A GIANT SNAKE-). It's reflected in that disgusting appearance, and it's reflected in his actions. There's very little he does care about, and when he is truly passionate about something, it's usually for reasons of it being beneficial to him in some way.

So, by now, it's no secret what ol' BJ is all about. He's loud, bombastic, crude and generally doesn't seem to care much for what others think of him. But something that ought to be mentioned is his humor. It's the twisted sort of thing that comes with being a conjurer and a shapeshifter - he's the sort of person who will bring objects and change outfits simply to emphasis certain points and words. But...not many outside of him will actually find it funny. Though he amuses himself in this manner, it's this twisted sense of humor combined with the occasional manic outburst that truly serves to put others on edge. It's just the way he loves them, too! He'll be a natural monster, and could very well be scaring others even before his transformation.

Betelgeuse himself mentions that he "lived through the Black Plague and had a great time during that", which speaks volumes about his personality. While it is possibly that he isn't telling the truth, as we've been over, he really has no reason to lie when he might as well be holding up a giant sign declaring how grotesque he is. It speaks to somebody who has very little regard to other people's personal tragedies, nor display much in the way of empathy. Just as he doesn't seem to care about himself at all, that same disregard for life is thrust upon other people. It's the sort of thing that would make him a very terrifying fellow in a dog-eat-dog environment like Ryslig's, where Betelgeuse is very willing to go out fending for himself.

But, on that note? As bad as Betelgeuse is, I personally don't believe that he'll be having all-negative CR. Though his intentions are far less than pure and his very nature is wicked, there is the possibility of change from him. He'll always be a bit morally ambiguous, but the idea for him to go from a fully-formed evil to being someone who's just a little rough around the edges is entirely plausible! It's something that's explored a bit more with the cartoon version of the character, but under the right circumstances, the guy has potential. This will not come easy, however, especially when an environment like this is just perfect for him to get up to his old tricks.

  • lecherous
  • fast-talking
  • manipulative
  • sadistic
  • foul-mouthed
  • selfish
  • filthy
  • loud
  • attention-seeking
  • hot-headed
Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character’s personality, CONFLICTS with it, or EITHER? Fits! A few conflicting traits are a-okay, but I would prefer one that mostly fits with his personality.
